Blog Post Week 6
1. Today in lab, we first examined our plants. We predicted that our plant was on the 16th day of its growth and development because of the flowers that are growing out of it. We also presented our jam-board biomes. My group tables more specifically learned about the forest biome. I learned that deforestation has a large impact on the habitats of forest organisms which also affects the food chain. It also leads to more extreme temperatures. It saddened me to learn that a small percentage of turtles don't make it to adulthood due to both natural and human factors
2. I was able to relate what I learned to what I already knew. I understood the impacts of deforestation on habitats. However, I learned more about this through an educator's lens. For example, I really liked how each biome had some situation regarding harmful impacts to their biome. I feel like I will incorporate this into my lessons because it forces students to think about natural and human factors that impact the environment.
3. I will definitely incorporate the turtle activity in my lesson plan because it shows how many turtles don't make it to adulthood. We examined the data from our activity to real data on a turtles, and while they were very different, they both showed the same trend. Many turtles don't make it to adulthood, and I am hoping that this activity would make the students more aware of harmful things in our environment. I don't even have to talk about turtles specifically. I can talk about organisms that students can see everyday in their hometown or region.
Hi Sid!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree, the turtle activity is so good at showing students how many turtles dont make it to adulthood and does a really good job of showing the students that its not just the straws that cause them to not have a high survival rate. I like your idea about not even focusing on turtles and just showing students many different organisms that struggle making it to adulthood!
Hi Sid!! I was also able to relate to what we learned about the human damage to the environment. I think it is sad to think that so little turtles make it to adulthood, but by educating our students, aka the next generation, we may be able to change that!
